Although it's a movie made long time ago in 1993 I was pleasantly surprised to see the animation was excellent. The only other ninja anime I've ever seen was Naruto so when I compare it to this one it's a piece of crap. This movie was something between Dragon ball, Naruto and Needless with a bit of hentai, an unusual combination.
Ninja Scroll basically comes down to a fight against evil. Well, most anime come down to that as well, so that's nothing new. Compared to today's anime it's different because it's on a different level. The story seems more real and it doesn't have a single dull moment. Characters are more intense and the emotions they convey have a more realistic impact.
It comes down to good vs evil, but it's not as simple as it sounds. Each monster they kill brought a few more to replace it. The male - female duo + the old man as an advisor made a nice team. When you mix a little love and personal agenda in all that you get an impossible romance in the middle of a private war.
Ninja Scroll is a great movie. I highly recommend it. If you are tired of modern anime and would like to watch something a little different this is a perfect choice.
